An Update on the Status of Pollinators

Nearly two decades after the 2007 National Academies of Science National Research Council study, The Status of Pollinators in North America, we will take a look the current state of pollinator conservation. Dr. Inouye, co-author of the 2007 study, will provide an update on how pollinator populations have changed and what trends we are seeing now.

Dr. David Inouye is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology at the University of Maryland, and Principal Investigator at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, where he has worked for 53 years. His research there includes a long-term study (since 1973) of the abundance and phenology of 125 species of wildflowers, providing an important database of how pollinator floral resources are responding to climate change. He has worked with bumble bees, hummingbirds, pollinating flies, and butterflies, on studies of plant demography following individual plants for as long as 50 years, and a project monitoring insect populations that has continued since 1986. He co-authored a book on Techniques for Pollination Biologists, and his 170+ publications have been cited over 24,000 times. David has been a member of the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC) Steering Committee since 2001, co-authored two White Papers from NAPPC, was a co-author of theNational Research Council report on the Status of Pollinators in North America,served as President of the Ecological Society of America, and was a Lead Author of the IPBESassessment of pollinators, pollination and food production.He is a Board member of the Endangered Species Coalition, the Hummingbird Conservation Network, and Citizens for a Healthy Community. He is a member of the USDA-funded Research Coordination Network that is working on a national monitoring program for native bees.
Bee City USA began in Asheville, North Carolina in 2012 when founder, Phyllis Stiles, threw herself into creating a program to help communities come together to help reverse pollinator declines. Phyllis’ goal was to engage as many communities as possible in pollinator conservation. What she lacked in funding she made up for in passion, enthusiastically giving presentations and spreading awareness about pollinators and the program she had started to help them.
